In January of 2003, my lovely wife surprised me with a new Kawasaki KLR 650, the bike I'd been drooling over for months.  I had owned a "crotch rocket" type bike about 10 years ago, but gave it up when the kids came along, knowing that my life span probably grew shorter with each twist of the throttle on such a machine.  Ten years made me realize that it wasn't so much the going fast that I missed, I just missed the riding.

The Kawasaki KLR 650 is not a speed demon like my other bike was.  Look at it.  It's like a Jeep on two wheels.  This is a go anywhere, do anything motorcycle.  Wanna cruise all day long on the interstate?  No problem.  See an old trail through the woods you'd like to explore?  Go for it.  How about carving up the backroads at a brisk pace?  Wherever you care to point it, this bike will take you there.  On top of all that, the KLR 650 is such a good design that it has been almost unchanged since its introduction in 1987, so it's very reliable.  In fact, it's so reliable that the military uses them.

So why doesn't everybody own a KLR 650?  It just ain't pretty enough, for one thing.  If you're riding to impress the ladies then this is not the bike for you.  Another thing is that the bike does everything well, which means that it doesn't do any one thing great.  So you're not gonna roost all your buddies down at the motocross course, and you're not gonna smoke all the guys at the racetrack either.  If you like riding 1000 mile days out on the highway, then your buddy on the Gold Wing is going to be more comfortable than you are on your KLR.  Pull over at the local Hooters on a KLR, rev the motor a couple times, and see how many Hootergirls come running out.  Yeah right.

However, if you enjoy riding just for the pleasure of riding; if you like exploring roads you've never seen before; if you want to ride your motorcycle everywhere two wheels can go; or if you think of motorcycling as an adventure, then the KLR 650 is the bike for you.
